Why UL 891 Matters
UL 891 is the standard that ensures your switchboard meets nationally recognized safety rules, including component quality, spacing, labeling, enclosure strength, and fault performance. This makes permitting and inspections smoother and reduces field risk. As a dedicated UL 891 switchboard builder, we engineer every assembly to meet these requirements from the start.
What UL 891 Covers
- Construction Standards: Component quality, mechanical assembly, and materials that meet UL requirements.
- Bus Bar Spacing: Minimum clearances and creepage distances between live parts to prevent arcing and faults.
- Short-Circuit Performance: Verification that the switchboard can withstand rated fault currents without failure.
- Labeling Requirements: Proper nameplate data, warning labels, and circuit identification for safe operation and code compliance.
- Enclosure Integrity: Strength, ventilation, and access provisions that protect personnel and internal components.
Switchboards vs. Panelboards: Switchboards are free-standing, high-capacity distribution assemblies — bigger than panelboards and used where reliability and safety drive design.
If your distribution needs are below ~800 A or a wall-mounted panel suffices, we can advise on that too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our switchboards, process, and capabilities.
A UL 891 switchboard is a dead-front power distribution assembly rated up to 6,000 amps and tested to UL 891 standards. It distributes power from a utility or generator source to multiple downstream circuits in commercial and industrial facilities. As a UL 891 switchboard builder, we engineer every board to meet or exceed this standard.
Many configurations ship in as few as 4 weeks from approved submittals. Standard bus ratings, common breaker frames, and pre-engineered layouts help us hit that timeline. Complex builds with custom features or hard-to-source components may take longer — we'll give you an honest timeline upfront. Fast delivery switchboards are our specialty, not an afterthought.
Major OEMs are currently quoting 16–30+ weeks for custom switchboards depending on complexity and demand. That's why contractors, engineers, and facility owners come to us — we close that gap dramatically with fast delivery switchboards built to the same UL 891 standards.
Yes. Every project includes full engineered switchboard packages — front/rear elevation drawings, one-line diagrams, bill of materials, and nameplate schedules. We handle revisions quickly so your approvals don't bottleneck the timeline.
NETA (InterNational Electrical Testing Association) acceptance testing is a comprehensive set of field and factory tests that verify electrical equipment is properly installed, connected, and ready for energization. We perform NETA-compliant acceptance testing on all switchboards before they ship. Every board leaves our facility as a NETA acceptance tested switchboard — no third-party field testing required.
We build switchboards for 208V through 480V, single- and three-phase, with bus ratings from 400A to 6,000A. Main devices include molded-case breakers, power circuit breakers, fused switches, and main-lug-only configurations.
Absolutely. Send us photos, nameplates, or one-lines of the existing gear and we'll design a matching or complementary section. We handle bus ties, barrier integration, and matching breaker families.
Yes. We ship to all 50 states. Switchboards are skid-mounted, weatherproofed, and shipped via flatbed. We coordinate delivery timing so your gear arrives when your site is ready for it.
At minimum: voltage, phase, main bus rating, main device type/size, and a list of feeder breakers with amperage and pole count. Our Switchboard Wizard walks you through every detail — even if you don't know everything, we can work with partial specs.
Switchboards are large, free-standing assemblies rated above 400A and typically serve as the main distribution point. Panelboards are smaller, wall-mounted, and serve branch circuits. If you need more than 400A or want a free-standing assembly, you need a switchboard.
Yes. We can design retrofit solutions for aging switchboards — replacing obsolete breakers, upgrading bus, adding metering, or building a complete replacement section that ties into your existing infrastructure.
Most indoor switchboards are NEMA 1. We also build NEMA 3R for outdoor/weather-protected installations. If you have a specific environmental requirement, let us know in the wizard and we'll engineer to it.
Yes. Our Switchboard Wizard has a file upload step where you can attach PDFs, DWGs, DXFs, images, or any other documentation. This helps us give you the most accurate quote possible.
Lead time starts when you sign off on our submittal drawings — confirming the design, layout, and components are correct. We get submittals to you fast, but the clock doesn't start until you approve them. Quick approvals on your end mean faster delivery.
Yes. We integrate revenue-grade metering, digital power meters, CTs, and monitoring systems into the switchboard. Whether you need basic utility metering or full power quality monitoring, we'll spec it in.
Use our Switchboard Wizard — it takes about 5 minutes and walks you through every spec we need. Or call us directly and we'll gather your requirements over the phone. Either way, you'll have a quote fast.
Switchboards are dead-front assemblies tested to UL 891, typically used for power distribution at 600V and below. Switchgear is tested to different standards (like UL 1558 or IEEE C37.20) and is designed for higher voltages or applications requiring drawout breakers and metal-clad construction. If you need power distribution at 600V class, a switchboard is usually the right choice.
SCCR stands for Short-Circuit Current Rating — the maximum fault current your switchboard can safely withstand. Getting this right is critical for safety and code compliance. We design every switchboard with SCCR based on your available fault current or fault current study. If you don't know your available fault current, we can help you determine the right rating.
Yes. We regularly build switchboard sections that match or integrate with existing installations — matching bus size, breaker families, and physical dimensions. Send us photos, nameplates, or one-line diagrams and we'll design a compatible solution.
Every switchboard ships with a complete documentation package: submittal drawings, one-line diagrams, front and rear elevation drawings, bill of materials, nameplate schedules, breaker settings, and NETA test reports. If you need PE-stamped drawings, we can provide those too.
